    Pre-sessional Pathway Programme for is intended for students planning to undertake undergraduate or postgraduate study at York St John University. The aim of the course is to give you the best possible start in your academic studies by equipping you with the language and study skills essential for success.

    There are 2 stages of the Pre-Sessional Pathway Programme:

    Stage 1 – General English in the mornings + EAP1 in the afternoons
    Stage 2 – EAP2 all day
    You must successfully complete EAP2 in order to progress to your degree programme.

    Entry Requirements: To join our Pre-Sessional Pathway Programme, you will need:

    IELTS 5.0 with no skill lower than 4.5 to enter on a Pre-Sessional Pathway stage 1 (General English + EAP1) start date
    IELTS 5.5 with no skill lower than 5.0 to enter on a Pre-Sessional Pathway stage 2 (EAP2) start date

    We are pleased to offer specialised, bespoke courses for individuals or groups, designed around our clients to meet their specific needs.

    Our past experience in designing courses for groups is varied, and includes courses for:

    Teacher development
    Language and skills development for military groups
    High school groups visiting the UK for language development and cultural programmes
    University groups visiting the UK for language development and subject specific programmes

    We also offer One-to-One courses for individuals who want intensive language training and a course designed around their personal requirements.

    The IELTS preparation classes are for students who wish to prepare for the IELTS exam. The aim is to improve your IELTS reading, writing, listening and speaking skills and build your knowledge of the exam itself. In your classes you will work individually, in pairs and in small groups on a wide range of IELTS preparatory and practice tasks. Your tutor will use a wide range of materials and adapt the course to the level and abilities of the participants.

    Students generally study IELTS classes in the afternoon, in conjunction with General English morning classes to boost their language and grammar skills (in total 22 hours tuition per week)

    The International Foundation programme is designed for international students who want to study a degree programme in the UK, but do not yet have the required academic qualifications or level of English. While studying on the programme you will improve your English language skills, gain some experience of your chosen degree subject and learn the study skills you need to succeed in British higher education. Success in the International Foundation programme allows you to progress directly onto an undergraduate degree programme.

    General English Language Programme

    The General English course is a non-specialist course for students who wish to improve their level of English. The aim is to make you an effective communicator in English by developing fluency and building confidence in speaking and understanding. In your classes you will work in pairs and small groups on a wide range of varied and interesting activities. You will have the opportunity to practise grammar and new vocabulary in real-life type situations. Your tutors will also adapt the content of the course to suit the personal needs and interests of the group.

    You will be tested on joining the course, and will be placed in an appropriate group studying English at your level.

    The course is accredited by the British Council, guaranteeing you quality in teaching, study facilities, and accommodation. We offer state-of-the-art teaching facilities, including an excellent multi-media Language Support Centre, where a qualified teacher will give you individual attention after normal class time, to assist you in meeting your personal study goals.

Accommodation

Homestay
Homestay accommodation can be arranged by YSJ International, staying with a British homestay host, to include a single study bedroom, breakfast and an evening meal, for £126 per week.
Hotel/Guest House
There are many hotels and guest houses in York, a number of which are very close to York St John University.
Private Rental Accommodation
Private rented accommodation is widely available in York, at a range of prices.
Residential Self Catered
At certain times of year, residential self catering accommodation may be available in one of our University student residences for £75 – £120 per week. You must be at least 18 years old to stay in residential accommodation.

We offer optional excursions throughout the year to places of interest , including Manchester, Cambridge, Whitby and Edinburgh. Many of these excursions are open to all University students, so you will have the chance to meet students from other courses.
